1. To select your mode culturing the fish ( earthen ponds, concrete pond in form of tank or using plastic tanks).
2. Type of fish you want to culture ( cat fish, tilapia, heterotis e.t.c).
3. Mode of feeding.
4. A suitable market after finishing your production.

Mode of culture
A person that want to start fish farming business must determine which culturing method is suitable for his/her environment, people staying around swampy area can go for earthen ponds, while people that staying where there is no land to dig can go for plastic or concrete tanks. Earthen ponds is good for fish farming business because it provide supplementary feed like zooplankton and phytoplankton for fish that is why must fish farmer prefer using it.
Types of fish 
A person that want to start fish farming business may select which type of fish he or she want to culture (either going for tilapia, catfish, heterotis e.t.c). Catfish is the most commonly culture fish in Nigeria even Africa at large because is strong and can stay in dirty water without any affect.
Mode of feeding
A person that want to fish farming business must know type of feeds that suitable for each stage of production and know methods and time that are involves in feeding the fish.
Fish feed are classified as

1. Artificial feed 
2. Natural feed

Artificial feed
Artificial feed can be buy from feed's marketers nation wide. Articial feed can be either imported or locally made by farmer him/herself
Natural feed
These are mostly found in earthen ponds they are zooplankton and phytoplankton they are microscopic in natute.
Suitable market
After finish your production, you must find good market for your fish so that all your effort will not be in vail.
